HOW TO MAKE LIVES BETTER FOR WOMEN IN THIS SOCIETY

For the final edition of this blog series, I will talk about perhaps the most common aspect of the topic- our dear society. It’s not like none of us knows what goes on in the society, what happens behind the doors of houses, what happens in the gossip of people and what is said in the pointless taunts and remarks passed as a part of routine. Therefore, I will not waste words trying to explain what is wrong, neither will I mention how to right it. I will simply mention the efforts that are already underway because luckily once again, this is one of the aspects that has had some light shed on to it in recent years. Every other week we see stories, posts and campaigns on social media. A new harassment case, rape cases, and murder cases against women and trust me when I say that it’s the social media that brings all of these cases into light and tries to ensure justice for the victims. Our paper and TV media is controlled, they are forced to deliver a narrative in order to delude the publi...

HOW TO WRITE PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF YOUR CHARACTERS

HOW TO WRITE PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF YOUR CHARACTERS:

Let’s talk about your characters again, but this time, instead of talking about their personalities, let’s discuss their physical appearances. Every reader is curious about how the character’s they’re reading about looks appearance-wise. It should be noted that appearance isn’t just limited to the colouring of their hair or eyes, but also in the way they usually dress, the way they shape their expressions, and their facial features.

Listed below, are ways you can describe your character:

  • USE FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE:

You can better describe someone’s features by using figurative language e.g.:

‘Her hair was like fire; blazing, wild, and untameable.’ or ‘It seemed the ice in her veins was reflected in her eyes; so frigid and cold they were.’

  • SCATTER THE DESCRIPTION THROUGHOUT THE NARRATIVE:

You must be careful of when to describe your character's appearance, it is preferred to scatter the description along the narrative at different moments whenever it seems appropriate. You will find many of your favourite author’s do this, sometimes it's done to bring emphasis to a specific feature at a particular moment, or sometimes it's done to show that the feature has only just been noticed by the narrator.

  • USE ACTIONS TO DESCRIBE THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:

A common way of describing the physical appearance of you character is converting it through an action e.g.:

‘As he slipped on his favourite varsity jacket, he made sure not to forget to grab his baseball cap before sliding it over his dark locks.’

  • DESCRIBE HOW YOUR CHARACTER CARRIES THEMSELVES:

By this, we mean how your character might move, or the general aura they present themselves with e.g.:

‘Although, he was much shorter than them, he held an imposing presence, as emphasised by the way he stalked across the room as if it was his battlefield.’

  • DESCRIBE THE CHARACTER’S EXPRESSIONS:

Again, as with the previous point, this will show the reader how a character looks when experiencing a particular emotion, or how their expressions usually are.

‘Others often mistook her thin pursed lips as a sign of distaste, they said she looked like she was constantly tasting something bitter with how pinched up her mouth looked, but as she laughed with lips spread in a toothy smile, it suddenly struck him how different she was compared to the rumours.’

I hope you found these tips making your writing journey easier, as they are very simple to follow, and essential to implement.
