HOW TO MAKE LIVES BETTER FOR WOMEN IN THIS SOCIETY

For the final edition of this blog series, I will talk about perhaps the most common aspect of the topic- our dear society. It’s not like none of us knows what goes on in the society, what happens behind the doors of houses, what happens in the gossip of people and what is said in the pointless taunts and remarks passed as a part of routine. Therefore, I will not waste words trying to explain what is wrong, neither will I mention how to right it. I will simply mention the efforts that are already underway because luckily once again, this is one of the aspects that has had some light shed on to it in recent years. Every other week we see stories, posts and campaigns on social media. A new harassment case, rape cases, and murder cases against women and trust me when I say that it’s the social media that brings all of these cases into light and tries to ensure justice for the victims. Our paper and TV media is controlled, they are forced to deliver a narrative in order to delude the publi...

HOW TO MAKE LIVES BETTER FOR WOMEN AT WORKPLACE

I recently came across a government post on Facebook, under which there was a person who made a certain remark in the comments. The guy so boldly suggested that women should not be allowed to give the CSS exam since their area of expertise lies in the cleaning of houses and cooking of food and not in the running of the country. He added, “Their eligibility to take the exam steals the opportunity from qualified individuals like myself and puts it into their inexperienced hands”. I laughed it off since it was clear that this person was crying over his own incompetence and decided to throw the blame over the women. The sad part of this little event, however, was that there were lines of other sick likeminded men in the comments who were praising the guy for passing this statement. For a moment now, I want you to think of this scenario in a different way. The offender and the ones who praised him poured their minds out, but this time the women they targeted were behind the screen of a phone. Imagine the ramifications if the same was to occur in a workplace setting where a phone screen won’t act as a protective barrier.

The fact that workplace harassment is more common than we think is a truly horrifying thought. Fortunately, it is one of the things that can slowly but steadily be reduced if not entirely eliminated. Laws in our country already prosecute an offender engaging in such vile practices, what we do need is a body that ensures the implementation of these laws. As I mentioned in a previous writing, it all comes down to the male ego, which in this case is often shattered when they see women in a higher paying position than them and since they can’t compete with them directly due to their lack of competence, they find other, immoral means to overpower them. If every CEO, every boss, every workplace owner individually understands the issue deeply themselves and then communicate the problem and the outcomes to their subordinates, a change is bound to take place.

The other root of the problem aside from the ego is the uncontrolled and unjustified lust and feeling of power, which God knows where it’s bred and just where it comes from. This springs into action when men find women in a less powerful position than themselves and develop the impression that any harassment or misbehavior they engage in will go excused. Note that I’m not addressing all men here, surely good and bad both co-exist in our society, it’s just the lowest of the scumbags that I’m talking about here. A simple “Certificate of Character” as I like to call it should fix this issue. Whenever someone is caught engaging in such practices, they are to be fired immediately and a tag be attached with them explaining exactly why they were removed. A simple law that disqualifies anyone with this tag from getting a job will definitely make the offender think thousand time before even thinking to do something.
