Your RAM is a major contributor when we talk about computer performance. If you have low RAM depending on your daily usage/requirements, it will definitely slow down the overall responsiveness of your PC. We have an easy fix for your problem if you are running Windows 7 or above on your PC with the help of virtual memory. In short, you can expand the amount of RAM available on your computer by using a USB drive as virtual RAM. It is worth mentioning that this method is not as good as the real deal since USB storage is obviously slower than actual RAM and it is not going to be of much help to you if you already have the recommended amount of physical RAM as per the requirements of your daily usage or your computer specifications. This method should be seen as a temporary solution for computers with low RAM but otherwise adequate specs looking for some extra performance boost for the time being.
Let's move on to the How to part:
Formatting your USB drive
In order to use your USB drive as additional RAM, it has to empty and formatted in NTFS format. If you have any important files on it, you must copy them onto your hard drive or another storage device. The recommended size is 32 GBs but you can use one with a lower capacity as well without any problems.
- Connect your USB drive to your computer.
- Open File explorer from your task bar or through the shortcut keys, Win + E.
- On the left hand side panel you will see "This PC', click on it.
- Now right click on your USB device followed by "Format" to begin formatting.
- When the format window pops up, click on "File system" and select "NTFS" from the drop-down list.
- Click on "Start" to begin the formatting process.
- The formatting will take some time to complete depending upon your computer and the capacity of your USB drive.
Enabling ReadyBoost to increase your RAM size
- Navigate to "This PC" once again to view all of your drives.
- Right click on your now formatted USB drive and click on "Properties".
- When the Properties window appears, go to the "ReadyBoost" tab and select the option "Use this device".
- Adjust the slider that appears under Use this device option to your desired capacity, it is recommended that you slide it all the way to the right side to allow the full capacity of your USB drive to be used.
- Now click on "Apply" followed by "OK" on the bottom of the window.
That is all! You have successfully converted your USB drive into virtual RAM for your computer. You should observe a significant boost in system performance after this.
Important: Make sure that you do not unplug your USB drive before you disable the ReadyBoost settings first.
