The PS4 has got an extensive library of more than 1500 games including, campaigns, multiplayers, physical copies and online games to play. Since the release of this commendable piece of gaming hardware, the new games appearing on the scene have been greater both in terms of quality and size. More often than not, the pre installed hard drive in the console is not enough to keep up with the demands if today's gamers and they often find their consoles running low on storage. There are two solutions to this problem, you can either replace the hard drive in your console with a new one or connect an external hard drive through a USB cable to the console. In this tutorial we will be taking about the latter and how you can expand the storage on your PS4 and enjoy gaming without having to worry about storage.
Since the system software update 4.50 Sony has added the much requested feature to connect an external hard drive. It is quite simple to set up and and use an external HDD with your PS4 or PS4 pro console. Following are the minimum and recommended HDD specs required for this setup to work
- Connection Speed: USB 3.0 or later
- Storage: 250GB (Min) - 8TB (Max)
It is worth noting that compatibility with every USB storage device is not guaranteed and it is recommended that you look up your preferred HDD regarding compatibility with the PS4.
Formatting your external HDD
Most hard drives are already formatted from the manufacturer's side usually FAT32, NTFS or exFAT. The PS4 does not support all of these formats and you will have to format it through your console using the following steps to ensure that it works.
- Navigate to the Settings menu from your PS4 home screen.
- Scroll down to and select the Devices menu.
- Select USB Storage Devices
- Select your externa HDD on the screen and choose Format as extended storage.
- You will be shown some warnings telling you that formatting your HDD will remove any previous data present on it.
- Make sure that you don't have any important data stored on your HDD before you press OK and continue.
- Once the formatting is complete, you will be shown a message confirming that it has been successful and a small green light will be shown on the screen next to the name of your connected HDD telling you that it is being used as your main storage.
Your external HDD can now be used with the PS4 for storing apps and games. It is worth mentioning that once you complete all the steps mentioned above, you will only be able to use this particular hard drive for storing other types of media without re-formatting it.
