So you’re a student who just graduated and is looking forward to his first job interview? Or maybe you’re still studying and have your first job interview coming up; in either case, you are at the right place. Interviews can be bit of a challenge for those who have not had the experience before. But, provides you follow these basic instructions, you are sure to kill it!
First things first, always do your home-work, which means
getting as much information about the corporation as possible. You should not
only rely on their Website only, rather go visit their social media and the LinkedIn
profiles of their management. This would deliver a message that you did not
just see the vacancy and showed up but you are really interested in the
position as well as in the vision of the company.
The next thing you should be prepared for is your introduction.
Now, the important part here is that whenever an interviewer asks you to
introduce yourself, they are not interested in the information provided in the
CV rather something that is not there. For example, instead of telling your
name and qualifications, you should talk start with your personal attributes
and how well you could perform as an individual in this environment. Be sure to
know well your strengths and weaknesses (present your weak points as your areas
of improvements where you are already working).
The next thing would be dressing – regardless of the culture
of the company you should dress in the most professional way possible – a suit
with a nice tie is always a good idea. Have a proper hair-cut, your hair
gelled, put on a perfume and make sure to have clean shiny shoes. This would
present you as an individual who is very serious about this opportunity and
would naturally leave a very good impression.
Another important this is to have a very positive attitude
which would mean to have a smile on your face, not interrupting, being very
calm and composed as well as being completely honest – there is a high chance
that any lie you tell or any exaggeration could be easily sensed by the interveners.
You would be asked about your expectations from this job and the salary you
would find appropriate – sure you can negotiate, but you must do it in a very
professional manner e.g. I was paid 50k a month at my last job so I am expecting
at least 55k a month here.
Always remember, in any job interview, you are a seller and your interviewers are buyer; your task should be to sell yourself and explain what value you would be providing to the organization via your role.
