For the final edition of this blog series, I will talk about perhaps the most common aspect of the topic- our dear society. It’s not like none of us knows what goes on in the society, what happens behind the doors of houses, what happens in the gossip of people and what is said in the pointless taunts and remarks passed as a part of routine. Therefore, I will not waste words trying to explain what is wrong, neither will I mention how to right it. I will simply mention the efforts that are already underway because luckily once again, this is one of the aspects that has had some light shed on to it in recent years. Every other week we see stories, posts and campaigns on social media. A new harassment case, rape cases, and murder cases against women and trust me when I say that it’s the social media that brings all of these cases into light and tries to ensure justice for the victims. Our paper and TV media is controlled, they are forced to deliver a narrative in order to delude the publi...

HOW TO FORM AND SUSTAIN A PASSION DRIVEN TEAM

Imagine yourself in the shoes of a Manager who manages a work team of high performance individuals… Seems pretty easy, right? Well, that is sadly not the case. Managing people and enabling them to achieve the organization’s goals is not that effortless.

Being a manager means transforming yourself in a selfless, dedicated and a much disciplined leader because at this point you are not responsible for your work alone, rather your JD becomes to inspire, lead and motivate your team to achieve a set of organizational goals.
The first and most important part of the job is to understand that not everyone is going to be easy to work with and ensuring smooth flow of operations can often become a challenge.

So, how can you become a manager who gets the job done with the display of authority and leadership but at the same time has excellent respectful relationship with his team? Well, keep reading;

The first thing that you need to do is to maintain excellent communication and building positive work relationship with your team, this would translate to keeping them in loop about the ongoing projects, what are they doing? What goals are they supposed to accomplished, and in what time? How it would affect the organization and ultimately them? The point here is to align their individual goals with the organizational ones and hence developing a passionate work environment.

Secondly, you need to be an example for your team; i.e. if you want your team to log in at work on time and you yourself are usually late, your words would not be effective. It is the responsibility of a leader to always lead by example. You need to form an environment where the team feels their manager to be a part of them and not a boss. It is found via multiple researches that those teams perform exceptionally well whose manager plays the role of assistance and facilitation rather than executing orders.

A manager should also have excellent conflict management skills as modern workplaces encourage expression of opinions; it is the job of the manager to ensure that this expression is carried out in such a manner that would not lead to a conflict and if led to a conflict, he must know how to diffuse it and even make people work together as a team.

If I could possibly try to sum it up, I would say that a manager or leader must follow the R 3 formula which is Respect, Recognize and Reward. You, as a leader, must always be respectful towards your team and always treat them with the basic respect and decency that an individual deserves. Secondly, you must recognize your team members for the effort they put in e.g. making a quick announcement to congratulate your top performing associate of the day. Thirdly, you must Reward your associates: these rewards could be monetary or even as simple as taking your team out for a dinner to celebrate the target they achieved last month or gifting the top performer with a game’s ticket etc.
The point of all this is to not look like a leader, but act like one.

The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant. – Max Depree
